Tips for sharing custody over the Easter holiday

The Easter holiday is coming up soon. For many families, it is a happy day full of pastel colors, candy eggs and photo ops with the Easter bunny. For others, though, it might not be quite as joyful.

Parents who are divorced often struggle with sharing custody during a holiday. Easter may be a fun celebration for parents who have the children on that Sunday, but the other parent likely feels left out. Fortunately, there are a few helpful tips that parents can follow to cope with shared custody over the Easter holiday.

Think creatively

No, you may not have your children on Easter Sunday, but that doesn't mean that you can't celebrate the holiday with them. Perhaps you can pick a different weekend to celebrate. Many schools will soon be on Spring Break--a perfect time to extend your Easter festivities. There are many creative, out-of-the-box solutions that you could consider.

Make new memories

This Easter might look very different from the Easters that you have spent with your children in the past. Incorporate the Easter activities that you enjoyed in the past, but feel free to break out a few new ideas as well. Let your kids know that it is okay to feel sad about this. But tell them that this is also a great opportunity to make new memories with new traditions.

Consider compromising

One of the most important traits of a healthy custody arrangement is compromise. This means that sometimes your spouse will have to bend, and sometimes you will have to bend. If your ex-partner has custody this Easter, then perhaps you could arrange to have custody next Easter.

Take time for yourself

Look on the bright side: If you don't have the kids on Easter Sunday, you can have the spare time for yourself. Take the day to relax and pamper yourself. If you celebrate the religious side of the holiday, attend an Easter service. Overall, enjoy having a spare moment to yourself.
